A two-toed sloth hanging from a branch in La Fortuna.

Morning or afternoon for sloths in La Fortuna?

In El Tanque we see both species on the same trail, along the Habana River. The hour does not decide whether sloths are there. It decides whether you see them still or moving. The three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) feeds and shifts into the sun mostly in the morning. The two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) spends the day asleep in a fork and moves when the light drops.

Our daytime departures start at 7:50 am and continue through the afternoon, until 3:50 pm. The bird tour leaves at 6:00 am. The night tour leaves at 5:30 pm. Daytime times can change: the list on the tour page is the one that counts. You make your own way here, 4 km from downtown La Fortuna.

By day we see both. The one that moves most in the morning is the three-toed. The two-toed, by day, is almost always asleep.
Morning

From 7:50 until mid-morning is the best window if you want a three-toed sloth changing posture, feeding, or sitting in the sun. Two-toed sloths are here too, usually curled up. The 6:00 am bird tour is for birds. Sloths show up if the guide finds them on the way. It is not a sloth tour.

Midday and afternoon

Between 11 am and 2 pm most of them rest. We still find them: the guide knows which trees they sleep in. You are less likely to see a branch crossing. The 12:50, 1:50, 2:50, and 3:50 pm departures still find sloths. What changes is the movement, not whether they are in the forest.

Night

At 5:30 pm the forest changes animals. Frogs and bats are the regular sightings. A two-toed sloth may be awake. A sloth on the night tour is a bonus, not the reason to book it. If you came only for sloths, pick a daytime departure.

What to book

For sloths, book a morning departure. If your day only allows the afternoon, come anyway: you will likely see them asleep, and the telescope closes the distance. If you want a two-toed sloth on the move, add the night tour and accept that the night is not a sloth guarantee.

Rain does not cancel the tour. The trail turns muddy and sloths stay quieter in the canopy. A raincoat and closed-toe shoes matter more than the hour.

No hour promises a baby, a yawn, or a tree change. It promises a guide who walks this 1.3 km every day, and a telescope so you can watch without leaving the trail.
