What to bring on a sloth tour in La Fortuna

The walk is short: about 1.3 km, easy, 1.5 to 2 hours. You do not need mountaineering boots or a multi-day pack. You do need shoes that can take mud, and a layer for rain, because La Fortuna gets showers in the dry months too.

This is what we ask at Sloth's Territory, in El Tanque. The day tour includes a guide and a telescope. The night tour includes a flashlight. The bird tour includes a telescope and backup binoculars. Transport is not included on any of them.

If you remember two things: closed shoes and a raincoat.
Closed shoes

The trail is flat and it gets muddy. Sandals and flip-flops slip. A pair of sneakers you can get dirty is enough. At night this matters more, because you see less of the ground.

A raincoat

The tour goes out in the rain. A light shell or a poncho fits in one hand. An umbrella gets in the way of the group and the branches.

Repellent and sunscreen

Mosquitoes bite more at dawn and dusk, which means the bird tour and the night tour. Morning sun burns through cloud too. Put both on before you arrive.

Water and a camera

Bring water. There is no shop halfway along the trail. A phone is enough for a photo if the guide braces it on the telescope. No flash. If you bring a camera, zoom is more useful than stepping closer.

Binoculars, if you already own them

They are not required. On the day tour the telescope is the main tool. On the bird tour there are backup binoculars. If you prefer your own, bring them. You do not need to buy a pair for one walk.

Light clothes that dry. Dull colors help you blend in, but we do not turn anyone away for a white shirt. Leave strong perfume at the hotel.

Arrive a few minutes early, 4 km from downtown. The tour starts and ends at the same entrance. With closed shoes, a raincoat, and water, the guide covers the rest.
